The DIN 434 standard specifies a square washer with an 8% taper on one face, perfectly corresponding to the slope of standard U-profile channel sections. When a bolt is passed through the flange of a channel, the inner surface is not perpendicular to the bolt’s axis. Placing a standard flat washer would result in it sitting at an angle, causing the bolt head or nut to tighten unevenly.
